Although there are different types of pens in the market today, nothing beats the elegance of a fountain pen. When using a fountain pen, very little effort is expended in writing as the ink flows smoothly from pen to paper. The writing is also beautiful to look at.

In addition, fountain pens are considered the hallmark of quality and sophistication and this explains why many professionals prefer them to other types of pens.

However, without sufficient information, choosing the perfect fountain pen can be a daunting task. In this post, we share few tips to consider before buying one. We also share our thoughts on some of the best fountain [ens for under $50 to help you shop on a budget.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Fountain Pen

  • Material

It is important to consider the type of material that is used on the barrel and nib of the pen. Some barrels are made of plastic material while others are made of metal. Those made of metal are more sturdy and durable but usually cost more.

The nib is probably the most important part of your fountain pen because it regulates how the ink flows onto the paper as you write. Most fountain pen nibs are made of stainless steel because it is durable, stable, and doesn’t cost much in case you want to replace. Thus, it is suitable for everyday use and especially for those who write a lot.

However, the major drawback of steel nibs is the high probability of scratching your paper when writing. Other tips are made of Iridium, which is also sturdy, durable, and resistant to corrosion. It is mostly found in higher quality pens. And in case you are looking for luxury, you may also consider a gold nib which offers a smooth writing experience. However, this one is more expensive than the rest.

  • Width of Nib

The material of the nib is not the only thing you should be concerned about when looking at the tip, remember to check the width of the nib as well. The width of the nib determines the size of the strokes of the pen. The nib comes in three different sizes; fine, medium, and broad. The most common is the fine nib which delivers smooth thin lines like a ballpoint pen. It is ideal for drawing and regular writing. It is also used in situations where great precision is needed. On the other hand, a medium nib delivers thicker lines and is ideal for calligraphy while a broad nib is suitable for large handwriting. It is also perfect for drawing thick lines for stylish writings.

  • Nib Type

It is also important to check the type of the nib; is it a wet or dry nib? A wet nib glides through your page smoothly and helps you to write comfortably and fluidly. However, it leaks a lot of ink and this could mess up your paper and even make it impossible to write on the other side of the page. It is therefore not very paper friendly. A dry nib pen, on the other hand, does not write as smoothly as a wet nib pen but it dries more quickly and the ink lasts longer.

Some nibs are also more flexible than others and this allows you a greater level of control over your style of writing. In case you want a more practical pen, choose one with a harder nib.

  • Size and Weight

It is good to get a pen that feels comfortable in your hand. Size matters a lot especially if you are someone who writes a lot. Get a pen that matches the size of your hand. A small pen, for example, might be ideal for someone with small hands but uncomfortable for someone with large hands. If you can’t try it before buying, then look at the dimensions in the product description.

Also, the size usually affects the weight of the fountain pen; the bigger the pen, the heavier it is. The weight of the pen also boils down to your personal preference. You might want to buy a big heavy pen because of the appearance but such a pen might cause fatigue if you write for long and you will find yourself straining. Therefore, get a pen that matches your hand strength and feels comfortable in your hands. Most pens in the market weigh around 25g. Any pen that weighs above 30g is on the heavier side.

  • Filling Technique

Since most fountain pens are refillable, this is a feature that you should consider keenly. There are four common types of filling mechanisms; piston system, vacuum filler, cartridge, and the converter system. If you are someone who writes for a long period of time, the best option would be a piston or vacuum filler mechanism because they can hold more ink. They are also quicker to refill and you can fill the barrel of the pen fully. Piston systems also suck ink straight into the barrel.

Cartridge pens use disposable ink cartridges which means you can swap them easily in case you want to change the ink color. Also, they are easier to clean. In case you still want to use your ink, you can choose to replace the cartridge with a converter that is also easy to use and clean.

  • Cap Design

The nib and ink feed if exposed for long will dry out rendering your pen unusable. To avoid this, most pens come with a cap that can either be screwed or snapped on. If you do not want a capped pen, there is the option of a retractable pen that comes with a spring system that allows you to press in to release the nib or press out to take the nib back in. Very convenient, right?

What is the history of fountain pens?

Before the invention of fountain pens, our predecessors used dip pens and quill pens. Dip pens look like metal sticks with a nib on one end. Ink is kept in a container, which can be dipped into the ink to fill up the nib. Once filled with ink, it writes only for a few seconds before running out of ink again. You would have to dip it into the ink again and continue writing. Quill pens look a lot like feathers, with nibs made from the tip of a feather. They are dipped in an inkpot filled with ink and write for minutes before they run out of ink.

The first fountain pen was invented by Lewis Waterman in 1883. His pen had a tiny reservoir of ink inside and it used capillary force to feed the ink from the reservoir into the nib. The fountain pens that we have today are all based on his concept.

The history of fountain pens can be divided into three eras: quill, dip pen and fountain pen, and ballpoint pens (which are technically fountain pens as well). It might be easier to understand them by comparing the shapes of their tips.

Quill Pens & Dip Pens – The nibs look very similar to each other, but the shape of the tip is different. Dip pens need a sharp point on the tip while quill pens have more of a flat surface.

Fountain Pens – The tip shape of fountain pens is round like a ball. It has an inner reservoir containing ink and uses capillary force to feed the ink into the nib from that reservoir. One major improvement is how the airtight seal between the pen’s body and its shell prevents leaks. Dip pens were not as efficient at this.

Ballpoint Pens – Ballpoint pens use a thick ball-shaped tip made from hard plastic. The ink is housed in the middle of the pen and out one side is a hollow tube which contains air. As you write, the ball rotates within the hollow tube to pick up the ink on its surface and leave it on your paper

And fountain pens are not for your writing tasks only; they are perfectly giftable too because of their elegance and sophistication. So the next time you are thinking of getting someone a gift, you should think of buying them a fountain pen.
