There is no one stop solution for compliance in remote teams right now. A few companies who provide these services, still only uses emails. This is not very 2019-friendly. You should be able to get stuff done conveniently, in a few clicks in best case.
Carrom is Payroll and compliance for remote teams. Employment laws in different parts of the world can become really complicated. As a result, most of the people today are hired as contractors, even this is borderline illegal in many countries. Big distributed teams, have money in the bank and can choose to setup their own entity in a new country if required. But smaller remote teams cannot do this, and our mission is to help them.
We are two software Engineers, working in remote teams, been building products for almost 6 years. We are also a married couple, born and raised in India, now living in Berlin, Germany. We want to help remote teams hire from all over the world without worrying about local employment laws.
The impact of remote work
Working remote has had so much impact on our personal lives. The flexibility it provides is unmatched. We can travel, save commute time, and work from anywhere basically – you already probably know it all. I’ll cut it here.
Another fact is the equality it provides. Sooraj had some great engineering opportunities denied just because of the location while we were living in India. Talent is equally distributed all over the world, but opportunity is not. We believe remote teams would solve this problem, can really help build a world without borders – at least when it comes to employment in tech companies.
We have launched in Makerlog, Betalist and soft launched in twitter. We have a Product Hunt launch lined up soon. One of the hidden advantages of remote work is, remote workers are also remote advocates. The famous meme “How do you know someone works remote? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you” has lots of advantages for us. Since we are trying to solve a real problem faced by remote teams, we get a lot of word of mouth publicity. Till date, our marketing spend is $0. We have been featured in many of this listing sites like nohq, turing, 22north etc.
Also, recently we launched Carrom School in India. A flexible career accelerator with mentorship and tutoring for software engineers in India to restart their career as a remote developer, where you don’t need to pay until you get a job.
Growing an ambitious side project
As mentioned, both of us are engineers. I write the backend code, Sooraj builds the front-end. These days I do a bit of both. Our stack is Rails API and React in the front-end. We are only working part-time on Carrom. So we spend a few hours everyday, and longer hours on the weekend to build Carrom. As part of Carrom School, we are also interviewing a bunch of candidates for our first cohort.
So, for the past few days, it has been less coding and more talking to people.
We are trying to solve a really tough problem here. We have got some amazing feedback and interest from users and investors alike. We formed local partnerships in around 50 countries, to help with local compliance so far, and a payment partnership with Transferwise for bulk payments. One of the major feedback is the high cost associated with local compliance. Right now this is our top priority to solve.
At present, the solution is very costly since it is dealing with law. Not all teams can afford the price point we provide. That is why we are trying to focus more vertically in India right now – to provide the services on our own, and to cut down the cost drastically so that smaller remote teams can also afford this solution.
The extension of Carrom, Carrom School – where we train professionals to work remote, and Carrom Board — personally vetted board of remote talents — is in the vision of bringing down the cost further. In short, one would be able to find and hire remote talents staying compliant to local laws with Carrom.
